Alex Habib

Chairman of the Board

Alex is the Chairman of Summit's Board of Directors. He works as a consultant in labor relations, specializing in the airline industry, and has held various positions with a number of airlines, including recent work as a Business Agent and a Vice President for the Northwest Airlines local of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Mr. Habib is active with several non-profit organizations, including Sing for the Children, The Beacon Foundation, and Auburn Theological Seminary, and has clinical therapy experience in youth crisis counseling and group residences. Alex received his B.A. in Psychology from Trinity College in Deerfield, Illinois in 1981.

Mark Hostetter

Board Member

Mark is the Chief Executive Officer of Vinik Asset Management, a Boston-based money management firm. Earlier in his career, Mark was general counsel for equity markets at Merrill Lynch, a securities lawyer with Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York and London, and has worked in Washington DC as a tax analyst for the Congressional Budget Office and as a personal and press aide for U.S. Senator Jacob Javits. Mr. Hostetter is a third-generation Presbyterian minister, currently serving as Pastor for Stewardship and Mission to the Corporate World at The First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York, an innovative practical ministry centering on issues of faith and work, wealth and stewardship. Hostetter serves on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations, including New York Theological Seminary, Ghost Ranch Conference Center, The Living Pulpit Magazine, Auburn Theological Seminiary, and the Presbyterian Conference Association; and he is an instructor in Water Safety, Lifeguard Training, and First Aid programs with the American Red Cross. Mark received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1984, and his M.Div. from New York Theological Seminary in 1998. In 1980, he received a B.A. in Economics from Harvard University.

Katharine Henderson

Board Member

President of Auburn Theological Seminary in New York City. Auburn sponsors programs on complex issues in religious traditions and contemporary life, gathers critical intelligence about religion and education in our society, and encourages thoughtful conversation across the often divisive boundaries of faith, race, class and gender. Dr. Henderson is an ordained Presbyterian minister, and has worked at Auburn as Executive Vice President and prior to that as Director of Development. Before Auburn, Katharine worked as Associate Dean of Students and Director of Admissions at Union Seminary, New York City; and as Associate Pastor at Central Presbyterian Church in New York. She has been a frequent keynote speaker on the role of leadership, particularly among women; progressive religious leadership in the public arena and religion in the media; communication across lines of faith, race and class; and the role of philanthropy in shaping the third sector of society. She is the author of God's Troublemakers: How Women of Faith are Changing the World (Continuum Books, 2006). Katharine received her Ed.D. in higher education from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2000, and her M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in 1982. In 1978, she received her B.A. from The College of Wooster, in Wooster, Ohio.

James Pfenninger

Board Member

A staff psychotherapist at Miracle Mile Community Practice, a community-based non-profit clinic in Los Angeles, California, where he has taken on a leadership role in the clinic and is involved with fundraising and community outreach. Jim also operates a private residential management business which he started 12 years ago. He previously worked in event planning and coordination and has experience in all aspects of special even management. Jim received his M.A. in Clinical Psychology in 2001 from Antioch University in Marina del Ray, California, and his B.A. in Business Management from Antioch University, having completed course work at Trinity College, Deerfield, Illinois.

Jan Johnson

Co-founder & Clinical Director

Staff liaison to the Board of Directors, is Co-founder & Clinical Director of Summit Prep. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Ms. Johnson specializes in the clinical assessment of children, adolescents and their families. Earlier in her career, she has worked in admissions for Montana Academy in Marion, Montana; as a Clinical Social Worker for St. Mary's Services in Chicago; and as an Individual and Family Psychotherapist for the Youth Service Bureau in McHenry, Illinois. Jan received her M.S.W. in 1983 and her B.A. in 1976, both from the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Dr. Jeffery Borenstein

Board Member

The President and CEO of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. Dr. Borenstein, a board-certified psychiatrist, has more than twenty years of experience in health and non-profit leadership. He has served as the CEO and Medical Director of Holliswood Hospital, where he worked from 1996 to 2012. Dr. Borenstein developed the public television program and serves as host of the series. The program, which is broadcast nationwide, focuses on topics in psychiatry in order to educate the public, reduce stigma and offer a message of hope. Dr. Borenstein also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatric News, the newspaper of the American Psychiatric Association and as an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. An active contributor to the psychiatric field for more than three decades, Dr. Borenstein is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and serves as the Chair of the Section of Psychiatry at the Academy. Additionally, Dr. Borenstein chairs the Council on Communications of the American Psychiatric Association and has served as the President of the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems. Among the many honors to his credit are the National Alliance on Mental Illness of NY State Connie Lieber Award, the American Psychiatric Association Special Presidential Commendation and the Federation of Organizations Community Mental Health Man of the Year Award. Dr. Borenstein earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard and his medical degree at New York University.

Susan Hill

Board Member

Director in charge of strategic planning at a California-based health insurance company, Health Net (one subsidiary MHN, is a national provider of managed behavior health care and employee assistance programs), prior to which she was a VP in Mergers & Acquisitions at Merrill Lynch and VP of Corporate Development at Bank of America. Susan's skills, contacts in the Bay area, background in strategic planning and financial analysis, and her passion for Summit's work all make her an important addition to the board. Susan is the newest member of the Summit Preparatory School board joining in May, 2009.
