"... the times in my life when I have been most happy haven't been the times when I've had the most money or the most freedom or the most anything, but rather when I've been in love or in community or right with people." - Takweevee Scwanstien

  • Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Hartville, Ohio (The heart of it all!). My quaint town was tucked in between the Rock-N-Roll (Cleveland) and Football (Canton) Hall of Fames, two of my favorite past times!

  • Tell us about your family.

My wife and best friend Alisha and I have been married since 1999, and we were blessed with our son Owen ('03) and two daughters Neva ('08) Clara ('10) and Luke ('13).

  • Share something about yourself that might surprise people.

Along with art making/teaching, I play bass guitar and have played with a few indie-rock bands, used to live to play baseball and thought I might make a career out of it, spent a considerable amount of time in Europe while working with a non-profit called Youth with a Mission (Y.W.A.M), I am a serious woodworker and I cut hair.

  • Briefly describe your work experience.

My work career started out at seventeen years old apprenticing for a local finish carpenter while attending a trade school. I now have 10+ years of woodworking experience. My trade helped to support my family financially after giving Fine Art college a successful try, allowed me to assist in the restoration of some high end 19th and early 20th century homes in Northeast Ohio, and to finish out with wood some of the largest homes in the Flathead Valley. I started initially at Summit as a Senior House Parent in the summer of 2005 and was then given the opportunity to use my degree as the art teacher during the academic school day at the start of 2006. In addition to teaching art, I received my building trades vocational education endorsement in 2010 through the state. Both endorsements allow me to teach a mix of practical and fine art courses at Summit.

  • If you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be?

My wife and I could safely say that we would be staying with one of my close friends at his summer home on one of the smaller not so known Greek Islands. This is one of the non-tourist types of islands (mostly Greeks vacationing there) not far off the coast from Athens.

  • What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

Being with my wife and three kids, woodworking, playing music with others, listening to new and old vinyl records in two channel hi-fi stereo, remodeling my house (this is a love/hate), archery, hunting/fishing, hiking, snowboarding/skiing, and last but not least making art.

  • What draws you most to this type of work?

Being an integral part of young people discovering their passions in life. I am grateful to those who invested time into helping me put focus, dedication, and love into my life. I would like to impart similar qualities into my student's lives.
